SIDN

As the administrator of .nl, SIDN is responsible for the functional stability and development of the Netherlands’ country-code domain. SIDN registers .nl domain names and ensures that registered domains – of which there are now more than five million – remain reachable on the internet. Every day, SIDN handles more than a billion search queries from internet users, enabling them to reach websites and e-mail addresses.

Because it operates at the heart of the Dutch internet industry, SIDN occupies a unique position within the sector. The knowledge and experience that characterise SIDN are used to maximise added value, not only for Dutch internet users, but also for the wider community through the support of relevant projects. SIDN is an active participant in various national and international initiatives, either as a financial sponsor, or as a knowledge partner, utilising its extensive network of contacts. Thus, SIDN invests in more than the .nl domain alone.

IDN is well respected in the fields of governance and administration, where it operates as an expert partner on technical, legal and policy matters relating to domain names and the domain name infrastructure. From that basis, SIDN is also closely involved with various wider community initiatives, with the emphasis on increasing the security, reliability, openness and accessibility of the internet.

SIDN represents the interests of .nl at the national and global levels and acts as a key discussion partner for the government. SIDN participates, for example, in international forums such as ICANN, CENTR, RIPE NCC, IETF and IGF. When developing policy for the .nl domain, SIDN works in consultation with its stakeholders, whose views are sought through on-line and off-line interaction, such as the domain name debates and discussion on the DNSSEC.nl platform.
